Fire Victim Fundraiser - Poker Tournament Report
Not so fast bruddah!
Hold Up, Now! Daisy Lau pulls a straight on the river at the final table as Jocelyn Cacho and Shorty
watch on.  Alex Vargas got the last laugh though as he pulled out the win in the end.
Recap
First, thank you to everyone for generously donating your support.  I cannot imagine the pain that the families are going through at this time.  Hopefully our contribution can be a small source of encouragement in this time of great distress.  We plan to visit Natalie and the family this week at Shriner's Hospital to present your gifts and well wishes.

We would also like to thank L&L Hawaiian BBQ (North Highlands), Jumbo Seafood Restaurant, and Mikuni Sushi for generously catering the event, donating almost $500 worth of food.  The food was awesome and kept everyone happy.

Now to the tournament results...

We started with 45 players including Poker Pro Sam Chang.  After some 4 hours of intense poker action the final table consisted of Jocelyn Cacho, Steve Ixquiac, Suzanne Kanyavong, Daisy Lau, Steve McComb, Jason Schieno, Pete Sung, and Alex Vargas.  There was a fairly even spread of chips among the players during most of final table play as each player stood their ground fighting off elimination.  But eventually player after player was eliminated.  Finally as the tournament rolled past midnight the tournament came down to two players:  Daisy Lau and Alex Vargas.  Vargas had a significant chip lead at this point, but a back and forth heads-up match ensued, putting the final outcome in some doubt until Vargas was finally able to finish Lau off and claim the title as the event Poker Champion.  Rounding out the prize winners was Steve Ixquiac who placed third.  Despite the gruelling road to victory, each of the winners showed amazing generosity in donating their prize to the Saephan family with Steve and Daisy leading the way.

The Final Count
When we first conceived the idea for the fundraiser, we had hoped to raise $1000 for the family. It was a bit of a lofty goal since we only gave people a one week notice, but we figured if we get a decent turn-out we could reach the mark.  As the word got out about the tournament and fundraiser we were surprised at what happened. People began donating money even though they could not make it to the tournament.  We were blown away at everyone's generosity, particularly by the staff at Natalie's school, Elder Creek Elementary School.  I could go on with stories about the amazing things I saw from people, but I'll save that for another time.  I'll cut to the chase. As of Sunday, January 21st we have collected a total of $2148.  Wow.  Thank you to all the supporters who helped make this event a huge success!
Fundraising update:  Donations totaled almost $2500 for the family!
